Woodland Management in Essex

Woodland Management and Risk Assessments

To ensure healthy, vibrant woodlands that wildlife and the public can enjoy safely, it’s essential to have a management plan in place. Our experienced arborists and tree surgeons are here to help with all aspects of woodland management, from navigating compliance and Tree Protection Orders (TPOs) to carrying out regular pruning.

With our team by your side, you can feel confident knowing your woodland is healthy and set to thrive.

What do woodland management services cover?

Our woodland management services are comprehensive, covering all aspects of planning, planting, and maintaining a woodland.

Assessments and planning

Whether you’re planting a new wooded area to increase biodiversity or increasing the size of an existing woodland, we can support you throughout the planning process. We can:

  • Carry out tree surveys and site assessments to understand the existing landscape
  • Liaise with local authorities to make sure all the right permissions are in place
  • Work out if any trees or vegetation will need removing
  • Help you choose the most suitable tree species for planting
  • Plan the layout of the woodland, including the location of trees to be planted and any necessary paths or infrastructure

Planting

Once a plan is in place, our tree surgeons can plant trees, ensuring they are well-spaced and have a strong root system for healthy growth. We’ll also install tree shelters to protect young trees from pesky wildlife and adverse weather conditions.

Maintenance and improvement

Our woodland management services are also here to keep your trees happy and healthy. Whether you need trimming and tidying or to re-design an existing space, we can offer the following solutions:

  • Pruning, crown reduction, and pollarding to control your trees’ shape and size
  • Crown thinning to ensure they get plenty of light
  • Herbicide application to protect your trees from diseases
  • Felling to safely remove any diseased, unsafe, or poorly planted trees
  • Woodland path mowing and maintenance to keep access routes clear and usable
  • Forestry mowing and orchard mowing where required as part of ongoing site upkeep

Woodland path mowing with our tracked robo mower

Keeping paths, rides and glades open is an important part of managing woodland, but uneven ground and slopes can make it difficult with standard equipment. Our tracked, remote-controlled robo mower is built for exactly these conditions:

  • Works on slopes of up to 45 degrees, with the operator at a safe distance
  • Weighs just 260kg, so it has very low impact on woodland soils
  • At 1.23m wide, it fits along narrow paths and through gateways
  • Cuts at heights of up to 150mm, leaving cover for wildlife where needed

It’s ideal for woodland path maintenance, forestry and orchard mowing, and scrub control. For larger or overgrown areas, take a look at our site clearance services.

What are the benefits of woodland management?

Effective woodland management is the key to healthy forested areas. By carefully planning and caring for your trees, our woodland management services contribute to:

  • A more biodiverse ecosystem that supports wildlife and pollinators – we also offer dedicated habitat creation services for those looking to go further
  • A cleaner environment – healthy trees can help reduce CO2 levels
  • Improved soil health for more sustainable growth
  • More welcoming spaces for communities and the public to enjoy
  • Longer-lasting woodlands

Who needs professional woodland management services?

If you’re in charge of a woodland area, we recommend getting a professional to help manage it. Over the years, we’ve worked with private landowners, conservation groups, local authorities, and those responsible for large estates.

We’ll always tailor our services to the project at hand. So, whether you have an amenity woodland plot under 5 hectares or a large, commercial woodland over 150 hectares, we’ll put a bespoke woodland management plan in place.

FAQs

Does woodland need to be managed?2025-08-15T15:16:59+01:00

While it might be tempting to let a woodland grow freely, we don’t recommend it. Proper management can create healthier spaces, with less competition between species and a more balanced ecosystem. It also ensures a safe and accessible space for visitors, whether it’s a private woodland or a public space.

Are the arborists and tree surgeons at Crown Tree Services qualified?2025-08-15T15:16:37+01:00

Yes, our team members are fully qualified, having received all the necessary training to carry out woodland management. We also hold full insurance for your peace of mind.

Do arborists or tree surgeons carry out woodland management?2025-08-15T15:15:58+01:00

Our arborists and tree surgeons work together to provide a full-service woodland management service. While tree surgeons handle the physical woodland care, from trimming to felling, arborists can provide a comprehensive understanding of tree health, species selection, and long-term ecosystem planning.
